Altin Village&Mine // Eine Welt aus Hack presents:
ABSOLUTELY FREE (US // One Big Silence)
Absolutely Free is a 4-piece band based in Toronto. They cut their teeth travelling the world as DD/MM/YYY; four of the five members formed Absolutely Free from the ashes of this former project. The group formulates musical experiments based on instrumentation, compositional structure and other formal qualities ubiquitous to popular rock music.
Although very much an extension of DD/MM/YYYY, Absolutely Free create a more hypnotic music that integrates analog electronics, African polyrhythms, psychedelia, Bollywood and Krautrock. As an evolutionary step, the members have further surrendered their individual identities and mutated into a single, self-replicating organism. In doing so, their elastic musicianship and inclination to experiment presents itself as a cohesive and unified narrative.
Their debut single, UFO/Glass Tassel, was released in December 2012 on Fucked Up guitarist Mike Haliechuk’s One Big Silence imprint. The record has been met with nothing but positive reviews and UFO was deemed ‘Best New Track’ by Pitchfork. Their sophomore single, On The Beach, was produced by Haliechuk and is slated for release, in November 2013, conjointly by One Big Silence, Lefse and Fat Possum. The release will set in motion a string of European tour dates with Youth Lagoon.
The song reaches optimal zone-out potential before introducing its winsome, wandering melody. That sense of idyll, however is dramatically upended by an urgent chorus whose heart-racing tribal percussion infects the song for its duration, leading to a mercilessly cacophonous conclusion.

COTTON PONIES (GER // Discorporate Records)
Complicated popmusic, nothing for strong nerves, rather more than less and definitely inappropriate for the youth of today…
The three still young Cotton Ponies from Eastern Germany leave the paths of their childhood heroes – Shellac, Hasselhoff, Sonic Youth – off to new shores. They are, besides Garage-darlings Zentralheizung of Death des Todes, the only survivors of the “I Love Marbach”-collective, origin (amongst others) of the fantastic agency “Eine Welt Aus Hack” (Busdriver, Felix Kubin, Iceage, Thee Oh Sees, Die! Die! Die!, Ty Segall) and Experimental-Festival “Teenitus”. After the last DIY release “Sometimes I feel like gold, but the most I feel like silver”, “Zwist” is their first real state of affairs.
Coming from the grunge- and noise-world, Cotton Ponies’ music is now more than ever an experimental netting of fragile but complex soundsculptures, intense mind-tourette and nebulous songwriting. On stage the three ponies rotate on their instruments and yell rather Dadaistic passwords at each other, with the exception of “Krypt” – the last song on “Zwist” – which actually features emotionally urgent vocal-lines.
